About Chakobsa
Chakobsa is the constructed language featured in Denis Villeneuve's Dune film adaptations (2021, 2024). In Frank Herbert's original novels, Chakobsa is a distinct hunting and battle language used by multiple groups including the Bene Gesserit and Atreides, not specifically the Fremen everyday language. The films merge these into one on-screen language. David J. Peterson was hired to create a fully functional version for the films, blending Arabic-inspired phonology with original grammatical structures and vocabulary rich in terms for sand, water, and survival.
