متى is the standard word for asking 'when' in Modern Standard Arabic and many dialects. Use it at the start or inside questions to ask about timing. In some spoken dialects people say إمتى (imta/emmta) instead. It is not used to mean 'how long'—for duration questions, use a different structure.
