Tenir is the basic verb for possession and is used in many idiomatic expressions in Catalan (tenir gana = to be hungry, tenir set = to be thirsty, tenir por = to be afraid, tenir raó = to be right, tenir ganes de + infinitive = to feel like). Note that for obligations Catalan normally uses haver de or caldre rather than the Spanish-style tenir que, though you may hear tenir que colloquially.
