Esperanto Word of the Day
ŝati
/ŜA-ti/ • verb — 20th of Apr, 2026
Listen to pronunciation
Meaning: to like; to be fond of (to have a positive feeling toward someone or something)
Examples
- Mi ŝatas kafon.
(I like coffee.) - Ŝi ŝatas promeni en la parko.
(She likes to walk in the park.) - Ĉu vi ŝatas ĉi tiun kanton?
(Do you like this song?)
Synonyms
- plaĉi
- ami
Use ŝati with a direct object (ŝati ion). It expresses liking in a general, not very strong way — weaker than ami (to love). Note that plaĉi is often used in the opposite structure (eg. "Ĝi plaĉas al mi" = "It pleases me"), while ŝati takes the person as the subject and the thing liked as the object.
