Chercher is the general verb for looking for something or someone and is used with a direct object (Je cherche mon livre). With à + infinitive (chercher à + infinitive) it means "to try to" or "to attempt." Note also the phrase aller chercher (e.g. Je vais chercher les enfants) means "to go pick up."
