Examples

  1. Πρέπει να φύγουμε τώρα.
    (We must leave now.)
  2. Πρέπει να πληρώσεις το λογαριασμό πριν φύγεις.
    (You have to pay the bill before you leave.)
  3. Δεν πρέπει να καπνίζεις μέσα στο κτίριο.
    (You must not smoke inside the building.)

Synonyms

Used to express obligation, necessity, or strong recommendation. It is commonly followed by να + verb in the subjunctive (e.g., Πρέπει να πας). The negative form (Δεν πρέπει) indicates prohibition or that something should not be done. For softer suggestions, Greeks may use θα πρέπει or θα ήταν καλό να.
