Belajar is the everyday verb for studying or learning new skills. It can be used with a direct object (belajar matematika) or with prepositions (belajar dari, belajar untuk). Use 'sedang belajar' to say someone is currently studying. 'Mempelajari' is a more formal/explicit transitive form; 'mengaji' refers specifically to studying the Quran.
