降りる is used when someone gets off a vehicle (train, bus, taxi) or goes down/descends (stairs, mountain) and also for stepping down from a role. It is intransitive; the transitive counterpart (to make someone get off) is 降ろす (おろす). You will often hear the polite request 次の駅で降りてください (please get off at the next station). Note that 下りる (same reading) can also be used for descending in some contexts, while 降りる is common for getting off vehicles.
