Perlu is used to express necessity or need. It can be followed by a noun (Saya perlu wang) or a verb (Saya perlu tidur). It is common in both spoken and written Malay and is generally milder than mesti/harus, which express stronger obligation. In questions or formal sentences you may see the particle -kah added (Perlukah?).
