Potrebovať is the common verb for saying you need something (physical items, time, help) or that something is required. It takes a direct object in the accusative (e.g., Potrebujem nový telefón) and can be followed by an infinitive to say you need to do something (Potrebujem ísť domov). For impersonal necessity ("it's necessary to...") Slovak often uses treba (Treba to urobiť).
