Meaning: to return or come back; also used reflexively (volverse) to mean 'to become'; used with 'volver a + infinitive' to mean 'to do again'.

Examples

  1. Voy a volver a casa a las ocho.
(I'm going to return home at eight.)
  2. Después de la conferencia, todos volvimos a nuestras oficinas.
(After the conference, we all returned to our offices.)
  3. Con los años, se volvió más paciente.
(Over the years, he/she became more patient.)

Synonyms

  • regresar
  • retornar
Use 'volver' to talk about returning somewhere (volver a casa). For repeating an action, use 'volver a + infinitive' (volver a intentar = try again). When reflexive ('volverse' + adjective) it means 'to become' (se volvió famoso = he became famous). 'Regresar' and 'retornar' are more direct synonyms for 'to return', but 'volver' is the most common and versatile in everyday speech.
