ได้ is extremely common and flexible. Use it after a verb to show ability or possibility (e.g., ทำได้ = can do), with a question particle to ask if someone can do something (พูดได้ไหม?), or with ไม่ (ไม่ได้) to negate ability or indicate that something did not happen. In more formal contexts you can use สามารถ; 'ได้' is usually more natural in everyday speech.
