Dia de Reis

Dia de Reis, or Epiphany, is celebrated in Catalonia on January 6th, marking the end of the Christmas season. This day is particularly significant for children, as it is the main gift-giving day. The celebration begins with the Cavalcada de Reis, a colorful parade featuring the Three Wise Men—Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar—who travel through the streets on camels, throwing candies to the children. The parade is a highly anticipated event, with different routes in various cities, including Barcelona, where it starts at the Arc de Triomf and ends at the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc.

After the parade, children leave their shoes by the window or on the balcony with a small present or piece of fruit for the camels. In the morning, they wake up to find gifts left by the Three Wise Men. Another highlight of the day is the tortell de Reis, a traditional cake shaped like a ring, decorated with dried fruits and candied fruit. Inside the cake, there is a small figurine of a king and a bean. Whoever finds the figurine is crowned king or queen for the day, while the one who finds the bean has to pay for the cake the following year. Families gather to enjoy this sweet treat together, making Dia de Reis a day filled with joy, tradition, and delicious food.
