Dan državnosti

Dan državnosti in Croatia is celebrated on 30 May. It marks 30 May 1990, when the first modern multi-party Croatian Parliament was constituted after the first democratic elections. For many Croatians, the date is connected with the political break from socialist Yugoslavia and the beginning of the path toward full independence, even though the formal independence decisions came later. The holiday was originally observed on 30 May, then moved to another date in 2001, and restored to 30 May in 2020. Because of that history, older generations often speak about trideseti svibnja with strong personal and political feeling, not simply as a spring public holiday.

As a public holiday, Dan državnosti is marked most visibly in Zagreb with official state ceremonies, speeches, and wreath-laying at memorial sites connected with the Homeland War and the creation of the modern Croatian state. Croatian flags are displayed on public buildings, and national television follows the main events during the day. State leaders, veterans, members of the armed forces, and police representatives are usually prominent in the public program. Outside the capital, the day is often observed more quietly, with municipal commemorations and local evening concerts. A simple greeting people use is Sretan Dan državnosti, and the tone of the day is formal, patriotic, and commemorative.
