Mortensaften, or St. Martin's Eve, is a traditional Danish celebration that takes place on November 10th each year. It is a time for families to gather and enjoy a special meal together, marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the winter months. The evening is named after Saint Martin of Tours, a Roman soldier who became known for his good deeds and kindness.
The centrepiece of the Mortensaften dinner is roast duck, or in some families a goose, stuffed with apples and prunes and served with red cabbage, caramelised potatoes and plenty of gravy. The meal recalls the legend of Saint Martin, who hid among the geese to avoid being made a bishop; the geese gave him away with their cackling, and eating one on his eve is the traditional revenge. Restaurants and canteens across Denmark put duck on the menu for the evening, families invite guests, and dessert is often apple cake or a bowl of the season's first æbleskiver. There are no processions or lanterns in Denmark: Mortensaften is a hyggelig dinner at home.
