Eerste Kerstdag (First Christmas Day) and Tweede Kerstdag (Second Christmas Day) are celebrated on December 25th and 26th in the Netherlands. These days are all about spending quality time with family and enjoying traditional meals. The celebrations often begin with opening presents under the Christmas tree, usually on the morning of Eerste Kerstdag. After that, families gather for a hearty lunch, which often includes dishes like kerststol (a sweet bread with dried fruits and almond paste) and oliebollen (deep-fried dough balls dusted with powdered sugar).
Christmas dinner is the centrepiece, and for many families that means gourmetten: a set of tiny pans on an electric grill in the middle of the table, where everyone fries their own strips of meat, prawns and vegetables for hours, or a fondue. Tweede Kerstdag, 26 December, is a holiday too, spent with the other side of the family or at a Christmas market. Since Sinterklaas takes care of the presents on 5 December, gifts play a smaller role at Christmas; what matters is the tree, the candles, a long kerstontbijt, the Christmas breakfast, and a walk in the lights.
