Nikolaustag
St Nicholas Day, when children clean their boots on the evening of the fifth to find them filled with chocolate, nuts and small toys.
Nikolaustag, or St. Nicholas Day, is celebrated on December 6th in Germany and other German-speaking countries. It honors St. Nicholas, a bishop known for his generosity and gift-giving. The day is particularly exciting for children, who eagerly anticipate the arrival of St. Nicholas or his helper, Knecht Ruprecht, who brings gifts and sweets.
On the evening of 5 December children clean and polish a boot and put it outside the door or on the windowsill. Overnight the Nikolaus fills it with mandarins, nuts, chocolate and a small present; a birch rod, the Rute, is the traditional warning for those who were naughty. When the Nikolaus visits a kindergarten or a family party, often with his grim helper Knecht Ruprecht, he reads from his golden book and asks the children for a poem or a song before the sack is opened. Bakeries sell Nikolaus figures made of chocolate or sweet bread, and the day marks the start of the Christmas season.
