what Oktoberfest is

Oktoberfest is a 16- to 18-day festival running from mid or late September to the first weekend in October, with more than six million people from around the world attending the event every year. It is an annual celebration held since 1810, when it was a royal wedding celebration that was opened to the public. The festival is held on an area named Theresienwiese, often called the Wiesn for short, located near the center of Munich.

The festival begins with a ceremonial tapping of the first keg of beer by the Mayor of Munich, who announces 'O'zapft is!' (It's tapped!). This marks the official start of the beer drinking. The festival grounds are divided into several large beer tents, each operated by one of the six main Munich breweries: Augustiner-Bräu, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner, and Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu. Each tent has its own unique atmosphere and specialties, with some seating thousands of people.
