Szent István napja

Szent István napja is celebrated on 20 August and is one of Hungary’s most important public holidays. It honours King Stephen I, the country’s first Christian king, and is also the state foundation day. In Budapest, the day usually begins with an official flag-raising ceremony at Kossuth Lajos tér by the Parliament. Across the country, towns and villages hold local programmes, but one ritual appears almost everywhere: the blessing of the new bread, made from the year’s first wheat. Bakers present loaves, clergy bless them, and pieces are often shared with the public. Because of this, 20 August is closely linked not only with the state, but also with bread and harvest traditions.

In Budapest, religious observances are centred on St. Stephen’s Basilica, where a festive mass is traditionally held, followed by a procession of the Holy Right, the relic associated with St Stephen. The best-known part of the holiday comes at night: the large 20 August fireworks over the Danube, watched from the embankments, bridges, and hills on both the Buda and Pest sides.
