Festa della Liberazione
Liberation Day, commemorating the end of the Nazi occupation and the Fascist regime in 1945 with parades and ceremonies.
Festa della Liberazione falls on 25 April and is a national holiday across Italy. It commemorates the 1945 end of Nazi occupation and the Fascist regime, and it is tied especially to the general partisan uprising proclaimed in northern cities on 25 April. The most formal state ceremony takes place in Rome at the Altare della Patria, where the President of the Republic lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Municipalities across the country organize their own commemorations too: mayors, local officials, veterans’ groups, and ANPI associations gather in piazzas, at war memorials, and at plaques dedicated to the Resistance. Italian flags, laurel wreaths, and public speeches are central parts of the morning.
In cities such as Milan, Turin, and Genoa, 25 April is also a day of marches, banners, and songs because these places were central to the Resistance and the liberation of the north. Crowds often move from one monument to another for wreath-laying, then stop for speeches, readings, or the roll call of local fallen partisans. “Bella ciao” and other partisan songs are commonly sung, and people may greet one another with “Buon 25 aprile” or the slogan “Ora e sempre Resistenza.” Some museums, former prisons, or memorial sites host special visits on the day. After the official ceremonies, many Italians use the spring holiday for lunch outside or a short trip, but the public memory ceremonies remain the focus.
