La Befana, or Epiphany, is celebrated on January 6th in Italy, marking the end of the Christmas season. The event is centered around the legend of La Befana, a good witch who delivers sweets and small gifts to children. According to the tradition, La Befana flies on her broomstick during the night between January 5th and 6th, filling the stockings of good children with candies and leaving coal for the naughty ones.
On the night of the 5th the stockings, le calze, hang from the fireplace or the bedpost, and in the morning they hold caramelle, mandarins, chocolate and, for anyone who misbehaved, carbone dolce, black sugar shaped like coal, which children secretly prefer. Every child knows the rhyme 'La Befana vien di notte con le scarpe tutte rotte', the Befana comes at night with her shoes all broken. On the 6th the figures of the Re Magi are finally placed in the presepe, towns hold a sfilata with a Befana on a crane or a fire engine, and the proverb has the last word: 'L'Epifania tutte le feste porta via', Epiphany takes all the holidays away.
