what San Valentino is

San Valentino falls on 14 February. In Italy it is mainly a day for couples, but its name also points back to Saint Valentine, a bishop associated with Terni in Umbria. That link gives the date a local religious dimension alongside the modern romantic one: in Terni, celebrations connected to the saint take place around the Basilica di San Valentino, while elsewhere the day is more visible in shop windows, bakeries, florists, and restaurants. Italians commonly call it la festa degli innamorati, “the lovers’ holiday.” In the days before 14 February, bars and pastry shops prepare heart-shaped sweets, and stores display red packaging, roses, and boxed chocolates.

On the day itself, many couples exchange flowers, perfume, jewelry, or small romantic gifts, then go out for an aperitivo or a cena romantica. Red roses are especially common, and one of the most recognizable treats is Baci Perugina, the hazelnut-and-chocolate candy from Perugia wrapped with tiny love notes inside. Restaurants in big cities and small towns alike may offer fixed Valentine’s menus, candlelit tables, or heart-themed desserts, so reservations are often made in advance for the evening of 14 February. Typical phrases like Ti amo, Sei il mio amore, and Buon San Valentino appear on cards, messages, and social posts through the day.
