Narodowe Święto Niepodległości

Narodowe Święto Niepodległości, or National Independence Day, is a significant public holiday in Poland, observed annually on November 11th. This day commemorates the restoration of Poland's sovereignty in 1918 after 123 years of partitions by Prussia, Russia, and Austria. The holiday is marked by a sense of national pride and unity, with various events and ceremonies held across the country. The date marks 11 November 1918, when Józef Piłsudski took command of the army in Warsaw.

The official ceremony takes place at noon on Piłsudski Square in Warsaw, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, with a ceremonial changing of the guard, the president's speech and wreath-laying. Cities hold independence runs and family picnics, choirs sing patriotic songs together, and in the afternoon the huge Independence March moves through the capital. Almost everyone pins a white-and-red cockade to a coat, flags hang from balconies, and in Poznań the day is also St Martin's Day, celebrated with the sweet rogal świętomarciński croissant.
