Wszystkich Świętych, or All Saints' Day, and Zaduszki, or All Souls' Day, are two closely related holidays in Poland that honor the deceased. They occur annually on November 1st and 2nd, respectively. These days are marked by a solemn atmosphere as families visit cemeteries to pay their respects to departed loved ones. The cemeteries are transformed into vast, glowing landscapes as millions of people light znicze candles, which are tall, thin candles placed in glass containers, and place them on the graves.
The graves are also adorned with chrysanthemums, which are traditionally associated with these days. These flowers are often given as gifts to family members and friends as a symbol of remembrance. During these days, it is customary to visit the graves of family members and friends.The atmosphere is one of quiet reflection and remembrance, with many people spending hours at the cemeteries, often into the late evening.
