Dia da Consciência Negra, or Black Awareness Day, is observed annually on November 20th in Brazil. This day commemorates Zumbi dos Palmares, the last leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares, a settlement of escaped slaves in the 17th century. Zumbi is celebrated for his resistance against slavery and his fight for freedom, making him a symbol of black resistance and cultural pride. Since 2024 the date has been a national public holiday across Brazil.
On this day, various events and activities take place across Brazil to celebrate Afro-Brazilian heritage and promote racial equality. These include cultural performances, such as capoeira demonstrations and traditional music like samba and afoxé.
