Dia de Reis, or Epiphany, marks the end of the holiday season in Portugal and Brazil on January 6th. This day commemorates the visit of the Three Wise Men to the baby Jesus. In Portugal, families gather to enjoy a traditional cake called bolo-rei, a sweet bread filled with dried fruits and nuts, with a fava bean hidden inside. Whoever finds the bean is said to have good luck for the year and is often responsible for buying the bolo-rei the following year.
One of the most charming traditions on Dia de Reis is the Janeiras, where groups of friends and family go door-to-door singing traditional songs, known as Janeiras, to bring good luck for the new year. These songs often mention the Three Wise Men and the blessings they bring. In return for their songs, the performers receive small gifts, sweets, or money. In Brazil, the celebration is equally vibrant, with processions and parties honoring the Three Wise Men, and families exchanging gifts.
