what Ziua Națională a României is

Ziua Națională a României falls on 1 December, the anniversary of the Great National Assembly of Alba Iulia in 1918, when 1,228 delegates from Transylvania, Banat, Crișana and Maramureș voted to unite with the Kingdom of Romania. Earlier that year Bessarabia and Bukovina had done the same, so the date came to stand for the Great Union that created modern Romania. It has been the national day since 1990, and a public holiday on which schools, banks and offices close.

The centrepiece is the military parade at the Arch of Triumph in Bucharest, where the president reviews the troops, aircraft fly over and the crowd waves the blue, yellow and red tricolour. Alba Iulia holds its own ceremony in the Union Hall, where the resolution was read, followed by concerts and a torchlight procession through the citadel. Towns everywhere serve a free portion of beans with smoked pork knuckle, the traditional soldiers' dish, from army field kitchens, and the day ends with fireworks.
