what Zafer Bayramı is

Zafer Bayramı, or Victory Day, is celebrated every year on 30 August in Turkey. It commemorates the final phase of the Great Offensive in 1922 and the decisive Battle of Dumlupınar, a turning point in the Turkish War of Independence. It is one of Turkey’s official national holidays, so government offices, banks, and many workplaces are closed. The day has a strongly state and military character: it honors Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the commanders of the war, and members of the armed forces. You will see Turkish flags on balconies, shopfronts, and public buildings, and you will hear people say “30 Ağustos Zafer Bayramınız kutlu olsun” to mark the occasion.

The most formal ceremonies take place in Ankara, where senior state officials visit Anıtkabir, Atatürk’s mausoleum, and military units take part in official events. Across the country, the day usually begins with wreath-laying ceremonies at Atatürk monuments and moments of respect, followed by the singing of the national anthem, İstiklal Marşı. In many cities there are military parades, police and gendarmerie participation, and public air shows by Turkish military aerobatic teams. Municipalities also organize evening concerts in central squares, so the mood shifts from formal remembrance in the morning to public celebration later in the day. In Kütahya’s Dumlupınar area, commemorations connect the holiday directly to the battlefield itself.
