Meaning: to like; to be pleasing (literally: to please)

Examples

  1. Mi piace la pizza.
    (I like pizza.)
  2. Non mi piace il freddo.
    (I don't like the cold.)
  3. Ti è piaciuto il film?
    (Did you like the movie?)

Synonyms

  • gradire
  • adorare
Piacere is used differently than 'to like' in English: the thing liked is the grammatical subject and the person who likes it is an indirect object (mi, ti, gli/le, ci, vi, gli). Use 'mi piace' for a singular subject and 'mi piacciono' for plural. For past: 'mi è piaciuto' (sing.) / 'mi sono piaciuti' (pl.).
