Dormire is the common verb for sleeping. Use it for general statements (Dorme otto ore), for problems sleeping (Non riesco a dormire), or locations (dormire da un amico = sleep at a friend's). Note the difference: addormentarsi = to fall asleep, riposare = to rest. Dormire is a regular -ire verb (dormo, dormi, dorme...).
