How they differ

気づく focuses on the act of noticing or becoming aware (often suddenly or perceptually) and doesn't necessarily imply deep comprehension, whereas 分かる indicates that something is understood or known.

When to use each

When to use 分かる: Prefer 分かる when you want to express that you understand something conceptually or that something is clear to you.

When to use 気づく: Prefer 気づく when you want to express that you noticed or became aware of something (a fact, a change, a detail), especially by observation or sudden realization.

Side-by-side examples

  1. 彼が嘘をついていると分かった。
(I realized / understood that he was lying.)
  2. 彼が嘘をついているに気づいた。
(I noticed (became aware) that he was lying.)
Register & nuance: 気づく is neutral and commonly used in spoken and written Japanese; less formal than 把握する and similar in formality to 分かる.
