시작하다 is used to indicate the beginning of actions, events, or processes. It is commonly used with time expressions (지금, 다음 주에) and can be conjugated for politeness (시작해, 시작합니다). For passive or intransitive meaning, use 시작되다. In informal speech you will often hear 시작해 (start!) or 시작할게요 (I'll start).
