About Novial

Novial (from Nov + International Auxiliary Language) was created in 1928 by Danish linguist Otto Jespersen, one of the most prominent linguists of the 20th century. Drawing on his expertise in English grammar and language universals, Jespersen designed Novial to combine the naturalism of Interlingua-type languages with the regularity of Esperanto. It features vocabulary from English, French, and German, a simple but expressive grammar, and natural-sounding word formation. Though Jespersen's death in 1943 stalled its development, Novial has seen renewed interest in the internet age.
